Immanuel: The Word-Made-Flesh Is With Us

Date: Dec 14, 2025
Speaker: Tim Miller

In this message, we explore the meaning of the name Immanuel — “God with us” — and what it reveals about the incarnation of Jesus Christ. Beginning with Matthew 1:20–23, the sermon shows that God being “with us” means God Himself has come to rescue His people from sin and its consequences. Jesus is not merely a messenger or representative, but God in the flesh. The sermon then turns to John 1:14, one of the most theologically rich passages in Scripture, unpacking the great mystery of the incarnation. Jesus is identified as the Word — the eternal, divine Word through whom God created and ordered all things — who truly became human “for our salvation.” Drawing from Genesis, Psalms, John, Hebrews, and the Nicene Creed, the message emphasizes that Jesus shared fully in our humanity so that He could defeat death, make atonement for sin, and faithfully help those who are tempted. We also examine what it means that the Word “tabernacled among us.” Just as God’s glory dwelled in the tabernacle in the wilderness, God’s presence now dwells fully and visibly in Jesus Christ. In Him, God’s glory is revealed, His power is displayed, His will is made known, and true fellowship with God is made possible. The message concludes by showing that when we come to the Word made flesh, we come to the living God Himself — the Creator who brings life, restores order, forgives sins, removes uncleanness, turns away God’s wrath, and claims His people as His own. In Jesus, we see the glory of God, and in seeing Him, we see the Father. “We have seen His glory.”
