In this week’s message, Pastor Tim continues our series in the Book of Matthew by examining the message of John the Baptist. After reviewing John’s role as the prophetic forerunner, mirroring Samuel’s role in preparing the way for King David — we look closely at how John announces Jesus as God’s chosen and legitimate King. Pastor Tim walks through the “hope of Israel,” the collection of promises God revealed through the prophets: the restoration of creation, the rise of a Spirit-anointed King from David’s line, national repentance, forgiveness of sins, the outpouring of the Spirit, transformed hearts, a renewed covenant, the regathering and resurrection of God’s people, justice against evil, peace among the nations, and God’s ultimate victory. These “puzzle pieces” shaped what John’s audience understood when they heard, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” We then explore John’s preaching in Matthew 3 — his call to repentance, warnings of judgment, and announcement of the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire. John’s message aligns perfectly with Jesus’ own teaching, but as Matthew’s Gospel continues, questions arise about how the hope of Israel will actually unfold. Jesus’ response to John in prison reveals that God is fulfilling His promises, though not always in the way people expected. Ultimately, the righteousness of God, His integrity, faithfulness, and commitment to His word — guarantees that every promise will be fulfilled through the designated King, Jesus. The message closes by inviting us to consider our own response to this hope. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
