In this sermon, Tim Miller continues the Matthew series through the Beatitudes, focusing on Jesus’ words: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” This message lays the foundation for understanding mercy as more than a single act. Mercy includes compassion, kindness, patience, forgiveness, graciousness, and genuine concern for people in need. Drawing from Matthew 5, Matthew 18, Exodus, Proverbs, and other passages, the sermon shows that mercy begins with the character of God Himself. Because God is merciful, gracious, compassionate, impartial, and unchanging, His children are called to reflect that same heart toward others, even toward enemies. The message also warns that we are not free to shift the standard when dealing with others. Those who have received mercy from God are called to become a merciful people. This sermon also connects the message to the identity of Grace Gospel Church: a people who, by God’s help, are called to be kind, gracious, compassionate, merciful, and willing to forgive because of the mercy God has first shown to us.
