Water is essential to life, and throughout Scripture, God repeatedly uses water to reveal His power to bring life out of death. From creation and the flood to the Red Sea, the Jordan River, and the baptism of Jesus, these stories point toward the new life God gives through Christ. Teaching from Romans 6, Pastor Tim explains how baptism pictures our union with Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection. Going beneath the water represents dying to our old life and slavery to sin, while rising from the water represents walking in newness of life through the power of the Holy Spirit. Baptism does not mean the Christian journey will be easy, but it publicly declares that Jesus is now our Lord and that we have chosen to follow Him without turning back. This message also explores believer’s baptism, the importance the early church placed on being baptized, and the seriousness of the commitment baptism represents. It is more than a ceremony—it is a public identification with Christ, a renouncing of the devil and his works, and a solemn declaration: “I belong to Jesus, come what may.” As the church prepares to celebrate several baptisms, we are reminded that believers share one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one hope—the resurrection of the dead and eternal life when Jesus returns.
